"Hey kitty," Hawk mumbled, reaching over and touching the cat very gently with one finger. It awoke immediately with a little chirping noise, raising its head and rolling over. "What happened t'all yer fur?"
The cat yawned hugely at him in response, and then laid there purring loudly with its eyes squeezed shut, allowing Hawk to have a look at the tag on its collar.
"Janis Joplin," he read. "Weird n--"
There was a loud noise from somewhere just then, and someone called out, "Hello!"
Immediately Janis perked up, opening huge green eyes--she flung herself off the bed with a loud, long yowl, heading for the door.
Hawk followed her and paused at the top of the stairs. The foyer below was lit now, and Janis was already down there, meowing stridently at someone who had just dropped a set of keys into the bowl on the table by the door.
"Hey Janis. Yep, it's me," he said, over the meowing. He was grey-haired and grey-skinned, dressed in a dove-grey dress and black stockings, with a jean jacket and a pair of shiny blue boots. It took him a moment to notice Hawk standing at the top of the stairs, but when he did, he leaned on the foyer table, grinning up at Hawk.
"Ah! Hello there," he said, as Janis wound around and around his ankles. "You must be Hawk. Good grief. You're a big fella, huh?"
