The sun was still in the process of going down when Hawk left; the sky was deep orange and full of bruise-purple clouds. The crowd that had been gathering outside the building had now assembled into one, holding home-made signs and shouting, but Hawk merely walked past them silently.
He passed coffee shops and empty lots in a sort of daze. The crowds of non-human creatures not bothering to hide in human shapes didn't really register with him, not now. He reached a bus stop outside a clinic that only had one car in the parking lot and stopped to wait.
The bus that picked him up seemed rather large on the inside. The only other rider in the front part of the bus was a round fork-tailed cat wearing a small sundress, sitting in one of the seats, looking down at a flip phone held between their paws. Hawk stood, holding one of the overhead grips, gazing out the window as the bus moved on.
