The girl standing beside the sign didn't move, didn't seem to notice them approaching. Hawk held his breath, head abuzz.

"Ah," Teige said quite suddenly, and glanced at Hawk, "A ghost."

Then, seeing the look on Hawk's face, Teige grinned. "Whassa matter, sunshine?" he teased. "You look like you just saw a gh--"

"Course I can," Teige replied, and added, "get offa me."

"Back in Jatay you couldn't!" Hawk accused, trying to whisper. "You said there was only one cop!"

"Was there a ghost there then?" Teige asked in surprise. "Fuckssake, I keep tellin' you I can't see as far as y--"

"Please go away," said a small voice. They both glanced up sharply. The girl had turned towards them; she hadn't moved from her spot, but she'd shrunk back, holding her teddy bear tightly. "Please."

Hawk grimaced. Teige looked flabbergasted. "Wait," he said incredulously, "can sheseeus??"
