The glass fell to the floor and smashed, spilling water across the linoleum. Hawk stumbled back until he bumped into the kitchen table, and it lurched with a loud scrape.

Someone said, "Hawk?? What was that sound?"

He opened his mouth to speak, cleared his throat, and became aware of the tears rolling down his cheeks. "Nothin'," he managed, "I j-just broke a glass."

He sank slowly down onto one of the chairs, heart pounding. All he could say was, "...How is she?"
