"You had Enodia marked on your map," Teige went on, as Hawk glared at him. "That's clear across the country, innit?"

Hawk scoffed and turned away from Teige, shuffling his wings around; but, unbidden, flashes of flame-lit night roared into his skull. He was looking up into Liya's face, and her eyes were blazing pale and bright even against the wall of fire behind her. She was screaming, pleading with him, covered in blood.

"Only it must be important," Teige observed, sitting back smugly, "If you're killing yourself to get there."

Hawk saw, briefly, his sister on her knees at the edge of the flames, dark claws gripping her arms, restraining her. She shrieked at them to leave her alone; Hawk could not see quite who the claws belonged to--

He blinked and was suddenly back under the dock and the orange lamplight. For a moment he paused, and then sighed, shoulders drooping. He turned back towards Teige.

"My sister," he said wearily. "She...she might be there. In Enodia."

"Oh," Teige said, seeming taken aback. "Er. Well."

He leaned forward. "Listen," he said. "They've blocked all travel for goblins like me. I gotta get to Enodia too, but I can't fly. You gotta get there, but you'll starve on the way, the rate you're going. See what I'm saying?"
