The Cynn, the two green-coated spirits, and Helly all moved into the room. Yoshi wordlessly reached out and gripped the back of Liya's robe.

"Apologies for the wait, by-the-by," the Cynn said dryly, and started to open the unmarked folder he was carrying. "Bureaucracy, you know." Then, realizing neither Yoshi nor Liya had moved a muscle, he regarded them out of the corner of one eye.

"Please," he suggested, "feel free to sit."

Liya found her words. "Why are you here?" she sputtered, flushing. The Cynn seemed unruffled by her tone.

"Ah. Well." He glanced back at the officers on either side of him. "In their rush to deport you for the simple crime of self-defence, the Escalan police seem to have forgotten that they have no authority on Palace grounds. I do," he said, and this part seemed more directed at the officers than Liya. Neither of them to think much of this assertion--they were both totally silent, but were gritting their teeth in a way that showed their long fangs.

Liya realized suddenly that Yoshi had put a hand on her shoulder, seeming anxious. The Cynn continued, "And I'm a registered truth seer. So you can make your statement to me, instead of these two. Now, then."

He stepped forward, so that the gilding blue light from the next room fell on his face as well. Now that they were standing face to face, she realized he was was even shorter than her, by a couple of inches.

"Let's talk about tonight."
